Expected Cost of a Domain Name

Worlds Most Trusted Hosting gets $10.50 per year.

Go Daddy gets $10.99 per year.

Name Cheap says you can get one "from" $2.99.

So why are the prices different? ICANN eventually gets ALL domain names in their registry and all the registrars send them in to ICANN. Well these registered registrars will usually mark up what they pay for registration by a small percent so if you are seeing a really low price point make sure of what the TLD is. In other words, a.com name and a.info name are not the same price.

So how much does a domain name cost? Well it costs the price of the registration for whatever period you choose 1year, 5year, or whatever. And then it could cost you your online business. What I mean here is your domain name has a cost to your website business, either positive or negative.

Choose your domain name wisely or it will cost you business losses in lost traffic because the search engines do not index it properly, lost visitors because the name is not clear on what the site is about, lost visitors you verbally tell your domain name to who then enter it incorrectly. Your name should be as brief as possible and yet as exact as to what your site is all about. Long names with words run together can be confusing. Some names use the dash between words to make them a little more legible but a verbal description of that name can drive some people crazy. Remember that the search engines will look for key words in your name that are in your body content of the site to rank you higher in the search results.

So don't overlook the hidden costs when you purchase that domain name, spending $10.50 per year is nothing, but losing out on the traffic can be fatal for your business.

One More Step to Branding Your Business

Brand your site, Brand your name, Brand your Business. It is basic and we all know that even though we sometimes forget and make a stupid post on social media sites that may not portray us in the most favorable light. We have to stop and think, "If I put this out there, how will it help with my branding?"

Well, that's something you have to watch and that's something for another article. This is about one more step to branding your site.

Favicon.

You absolutely must have a favicon for your site.

What is favicon you ask? Why it is that little tiny picture that shows up in your favorite menu next to a site or page you just saved in your favorites. That little icon....favicon...get it.

This little icon shows up everywhere once you have it on your site so if you haven't set it up yet, read on and I will show you how.

First I want you to spend some time noticing how often you see a little icon from any site you go to, it may appear in your browser tabs of social media site homepage, or toolbars...just about anywhere. It appears because that site has it set up on it's pages so all you have to do is get a favicon and set it up. Easy.

First pick your favicon. For my site, I use the globe padlock icon. Get it? Trusted, padlock, Worlds, globe...it fits the site brand. So make your favicon something that fits your site.

OK, so now you have a fitting image. What you need to do is make it a.ico file so to do this just go to dynamicdrive dot com and in the tools section you can upload you image, they convert it and give you code to place on your site, and instruction on where to put it. (the code that is)

One caveat, the favicon is small so don't try to use and image that will not shrink down and still look good.

So go by my site, link below in Bio, and see how one more step to branding your site helps.

How to Manage Multiple Domain Names

Are you tired of going on an egg hunt every couple of months? Well what you need to do is stop hiding your eggs in all those different places.

You all know what I mean, you get this great idea for a domain name and register it with whoever is running a deal on domain names at the time. After a while you realize you own 10 or 20 domain names and they are scattered around the internet like Easter Eggs waiting to be found. Then you get an email from GoDaddy, Host Gator, or Worlds Most Trusted Hosting telling you that you need to renew yourname.com. Hmmm.. Now where did I write down that password?

Well, don't you think it's about time you got all your eggs in one basket?

All of the hosting companies out there will make a transfer for you and it is relatively painless. When you first register a name with a registrar they will usually lock it for a period of time, anywhere from 60days to a year. What this means is that you cannot transfer your name away from them until that period is expired. This is one reason people end up with a bunch of those eggs scattered all around, they decide they want to change and see they are locked and say "I'll do it later" and never get back to it.

So stop hunting eggs and start out by finding a good quality reliable basket, then go out and gather the eggs one last time, put them into your new basket and you will easiy manage all your domains in one place. The basket you use should offer to bring your eggs in at little or no cost to you if you sign up with the hosting accounts so be sure you look at all the little add ons and up charges before you sign up. You should pay around 10-12 dollars to transfer and the same for a years registration. Your hosting account should be running a range of 4-9 dollars per month depending on term of the contract. You should be able to open a support ticket at any time and get any questions answered and look for discounts on multiple transfers and registrations.

So find yourself a good basket and put all those eggs in one place.
